What They’re Reading in…the Breeding Barn

Triple Crown winner Gallant Fox, born at Claiborne Farm

As a regular feature, ReadThis will be bringing you a reading list from different parts of the country, to offer a glimpse of the wide, wide book world and hopefully give you tips on what to read next. In celebration of the upcoming Kentucky Derby, we bring you the books recently enjoyed by Greg Roberts and Doc Scoggin at Claiborne Farm, Paris, Kentucky.

Claiborne is one of the country’s greatest breeding farms, birthplace of such Triple Crown Winners as Gallant Fox and Whirlaway; Bold Ruler, the sire of Secretariat; and Kentucky Derby winner, Swale. For this Kentucky Derby, run on Saturday, May 1, 2010, Roberts is putting his money on Ice Box. “By Pulpit out of Spice Island. Born and raised on Claiborne Farm. I handled him some as a yearling, and know him very well. It is quite special to know you have touched one and played a role in their life.”

Robert’s favorite reads right now:

Have A Little Faith by Mitch Albom

Bleachers by John Grisham

Gold Rush: How Mr. Prospector Became Racing’s Billion Dollar Sire by Avalyn Hunter

Persuader: A Jack Reacher Novel by Lee Child

If Not Now, When? Duty and Sacrifice in America’s Time of Need by Jack Jacobs

Doc Scoggin’s favorite reads:

I know This Much Is True – Wally Lamb

The Hour I First Believed – Wally Lamb

Without Remorse – Tom Clancy

The Majors: In Pursuit of Golf’s Holy Grail – John Feinstein

The Right Stuff – Thomas Wolfe

(all book links are to Joseph-Beth bookseller, an independent in Lexington, Kentucky)
